According to Wikipedia it is associated with the Chinese folk hero Wong Fei Hung
That's how it's done traditionally. It's supposed to strengthen and condition your legs for fighting.
That's also what my sifu have me done on my first day but on the next training day he taught me forms and its applications which is better than doing horse stance all day.
